As we celebrate the anniversaries of our beloved Offbeat Brides, one special couple from 2011 decided to reconnect with us after a decade. Let’s catch up on Kate and Justin’s journey! It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 11 years since their whimsical wedding at Lighthouse Point Park and Carousel House in East Haven, Connecticut. Life has taken them on a thrilling ride, filled with milestones and unexpected twists.

In 2012, Kate welcomed their second child, but just six weeks later, they received the life-changing news that she had a rare genetic condition affecting less than 50 people worldwide. They quickly became part of a unique community, forever changed by this diagnosis. The following year, they faced another devastating loss with the passing of Kate’s father in 2013.

Amidst grief and uncertainty, they found solace in their new home in South Norwalk, Connecticut, which they began transforming into their own haven in the summer of 2014. Two years later, they welcomed their third child, a son, bringing their family to five. Fast-forward to 2022, and Kate and Justin have been busy building their own custom bicycle studio and bar, while nurturing their three children – now 12, 10, and 6.

They’ve also become proud pet parents to three cats and dedicated gardeners. Despite the challenges of the past few years, they’ve made the most of every moment, cherishing time with family and pursuing their passions.

As our 10th anniversary approached in 2020, I knew a traditional celebration wouldn’t cut it. A party was out of the question, and a trip to the Caribbean wasn’t feasible either. So, I shifted gears and planned an elaborate DIY photo shoot instead. Autumn, with its rich colors and cozy atmosphere, became my muse. I ordered my dream dress from Chotronette, a stunning pale plum soufflé, while my husband opted for a custom-made burgundy suit to complement the season’s warm tones.

To create the perfect setting, I embarked on a quest to find unique locations that reflected our love story. Lovers Leap State Park in Connecticut offered a picturesque red bridge; the largest oak tree in Bedford, New York, provided a majestic backdrop; and an old cemetery near Pound Ridge added a touch of nostalgia. With camera and tripod in hand, and a remote control for added convenience, we were ready to capture our special moments.

To make the experience even more memorable, we rented a hotel room near the first location and secured my sister as our trusted babysitter. On the day of the photo shoot, the freezing temperatures didn’t deter us from enjoying every moment. The camera remote proved to be a bit tricky, but the laughter and joy we shared made it all worthwhile. As I reflect on our journey, I’m reminded that our love has been a rollercoaster ride of laughter and tears.

We’ve captured countless moments, big and small, through different lenses. If I could offer any advice to newlyweds, it would be to love without fear, laugh often, communicate openly, roll with life’s ups and downs, and never forget to hold hands and hug each other as often as possible.

As I ventured into the picturesque surroundings of Lovers Leap State Park, Bedford Oak, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of gratitude towards the talented individuals who helped me look my best. To my skilled dressmakers at Chotronette, your meticulous work was truly appreciated. The suit that I wore was meticulously crafted by Hockerty, and the stunning hairstyle was courtesy of Lilith’s Locs.

It was an incredible experience to be surrounded by such natural beauty while feeling confident in my attire.

Celebrate ALL your relationships on your wedding anniversary

As our anniversary approaches, my mind wanders to the depth of love and appreciation I harbor for my husband, but also for the countless individuals who enrich my life. The gratitude I feel towards them is palpable, as it’s a reminder that their presence in our special day was a choice, not an obligation. It’s a poignant reflection on how fortunate we were to have had so many wonderful people by our side, and I’m reminded of the ripple effect their kindness had on our wedding celebration.
