We had originally planned a simple courthouse ceremony, but COVID-19 restrictions forced us to reconsider. With our loved ones from Michigan traveling to be with us for this special day, we needed more time to book an appointment at the New York county clerk’s office. This unexpected twist led us to plan an actual wedding in just 10 months – from Sami’s parents arriving in town to the big moment when we exchanged vows before our closest friends and family.

As creative professionals who thrive under pressure, Michael as a production designer and scenic artist, and Sami as a freelance illustrator and animation artist, we’re no strangers to thinking outside the box and working efficiently under tight deadlines.

As we envisioned our special day, it was crucial that the ceremony reflected our individuality and commitment to each other, without burdening us with debt from the get-go. Our desire to honor our queer identity and the community that has become an integral part of our lives meant incorporating elements that celebrated who we are and what we’ve built together.

The goal was to create a meaningful celebration that not only acknowledged our love for each other but also our shared values, experiences, and passions.

Planning a New York micro wedding can be an ideal way to celebrate your special day with close friends and family. While the pandemic may have accelerated the trend towards intimate gatherings, there are numerous reasons why couples might choose to keep their wedding party small and sweet. Take Dejuanah and Sam’s 22nd-floor celebration as a prime example of how a micro wedding can be truly unforgettable.

Their ceremony was a masterclass in emotional resonance, filled with meaningful moments and joyful laughter that left a lasting impression on all who attended.
In the end, it’s clear that love knows no bounds – not even those of a tiny guest list!

As the ceremony came to a close, we handed over our friends and family with a curated guide to our beloved Crown Heights neighborhood, where we’ve built our life together. With just six hours until the evening’s festivities at our rented bar, featuring wood-fired Neapolitan pizza from a local favorite and sweet treats baked by dear friends, we were left to bask in the joy of the moment.

As the night wore on and the autumn chill set in, surrounded by well-wishers carting off remnants of the celebration – used decorations and leftover pizza – we made our way back to our front door, where a waiting black car awaited, ready to propel us into the next chapter of our lives.
