I’ll never forget November 25, 2020 – the day before we escaped the chaos of Covid-19’s first holiday season with friends and family. As it was just us, Zainab and I had been pondering ways to create our own family traditions. We decided to start a new custom: putting up our Christmas tree on Thanksgiving Day eve. Little did Zainab know that this year would be extra special.

In the weeks leading up to the big day, I had subtly seeded the idea of adopting a German tradition – hiding a pickle ornament on the tree, with the finder receiving a prize. That fateful evening, while Zainab was occupied in another room, I discreetly placed the ornament on our newly decorated tree. When she returned, I asked her to find it, providing cryptic clues along the way (and making nervous glances at the hidden camera, hoping it was still recording).

With some persistence, Zainab finally discovered the pickle. As her prize, I presented her with a flat, white box. Unbeknownst to her, gift-giving is my love language, and she playfully rolled her eyes and smiled as she opened the box. However, things took a dramatic turn when she read the glass and gold ornament, encrypted with ‘Marry Me?’, our names, and the date. Her gaze met mine, and I dropped to one knee, ring box open. It was a moment we would cherish forever.

The Seven Blessings: an inspired, personal version for a Jewish wedding

With a blend of Jewish and German heritage, my husband and I sought to weave both cultures into our special day in a way that felt authentic. We cleverly reworked the Seven Blessings to align with our secular perspective, inviting our loved ones to recite each blessing aloud.

Fast-forwarding to the following days, we celebrated Thanksgiving at home, surrounded by warmth and laughter, along with our furry family member Minerva.

Just three weeks later, Zainab popped the question in style, presenting me with a stunning ring and a celebratory toast.

Tell us about the carousel engagement shoot:

As we reminisced about our whirlwind romance, the highlight of our engagement shoot was capturing cherished moments in our beloved neighborhood in Philadelphia. We revisited the park where we shared a romantic winter light show on the night of our engagement proposal, and also took pictures at the same spot where we shared our first kiss. This very same park has since become a daily stroll with our furry companion, Minerva, who has been by our side for over two years now.

We then ventured to a whimsical mini golf course featuring Philadelphia landmarks decked out in Halloween finery – a delightfully unexpected twist! The cobwebs and ghostly decorations only added to the playful atmosphere. Following this fun-filled interlude, we dashed back home to fetch Minerva and snap some shots at the park adjacent to our residence. And, of course, our loyal pup Minerva stole the show with her natural charisma.

What was the most important lesson you learned from your carousel engagement shoot?

As we embarked on this impromptu photo shoot, we deliberately set aside concerns about the number of people who might witness our whimsical outing in a bustling city park mere blocks from historic landmarks. Instead, we immersed ourselves in each other’s company, allowing our photographer to capture the genuine laughter and playfulness that defines our relationship.

We trusted her expertise, donning outfits that made us feel radiant, and allowed ourselves to be carefree and goofy – just as we would on any ordinary day. Our photographer expertly guided us through poses, offered reassuring guidance when needed, and ensured we were acutely aware of lighting and shadows. The resulting photographs exude a sense of safety, joy, and the deep love we share in each other’s presence. In hindsight, we’ve gleaned valuable lessons from our experience.

For instance, we’re now considering investing in transfer-proof lipstick for our wedding – a necessity born from countless attempts to remove smudged lip color from each other’s cheeks. Additionally, if you find yourself feeling awkward and unsure how to pose with your hands, take heed: having a carousel, mini golf putter, or even a canine companion on hand can be a game-changer in capturing relaxed, natural moments.
