As I reflect on our 13-year journey together, Chris and I have had to navigate the complexities of sharing our love story publicly. We’ve always been private about our emotions, so the idea of making them public felt like a significant hurdle to overcome. In response, we opted for an intimate ceremony that checked all the legal boxes, followed by a more personal exchange of vows, written just for each other.

I have a special affinity for elopements, and this one truly stole my heart. As I delved into the details, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of warmth and intimacy. The setting, a snowy Denver backdrop, only added to the romance. But what truly stood out was the couple’s journey, which was marked by significant milestones overcome to reach this momentous day. It was a celebration worth experiencing. The ceremony at city hall was a poignant reminder of the importance of loved ones.

We gathered our closest family members, grandparents, and friends to bear witness to our union. With a relaxed approach to venue selection, we let the space and décor unfold naturally, resulting in an atmosphere that was both sweet and intimate. The recently renovated city hall proved to be a stroke of luck, offering stunning views of the town through its floor-to-ceiling windows. It was as if the setting itself was acknowledging our love story.

As we welcomed our guests, we aimed to create a vibrant atmosphere that would make them feel at ease. To achieve this, my dad transformed one of his sheds into a tiki bar, complete with disco balls and fringe draped around the tents. The ambiance was electric! As cocktail hour drew to a close, I made a wardrobe change and Chris and I shared our first dance under the twinkling lights, swaying to the rhythm of Elvis’s timeless classic, The Wonder of You.

As I reflect on my wedding planning experience, two key takeaways stand out. The most significant lesson I learned was the importance of flexibility. Despite being a meticulous planner, I had to adapt to unexpected changes on the day of the event. By embracing the uncertainty and not getting too caught up in minor details, we were able to navigate any setbacks with ease.

In hindsight, it’s clear that many of the details I spent so much time perfecting wouldn’t have made or broken the experience for our guests – as long as they had good food, drink, and a reason to celebrate us, they were happy. The second lesson I took away was the value of staying true to oneself. When I decided not to wear a traditional wedding dress, I started to doubt my choice as the big day approached.

Comparing ourselves to others online only added to my anxiety, but ultimately, our decision reflected who we are as a couple, and I couldn’t imagine myself wearing anything else. By embracing our unique choices and not feeling pressured to conform, we were able to create an authentic celebration that truly represented us.

The photographer behind this unforgettable wedding was Madeline Kimberly Photography, whose work can be found on Instagram @madelinekimberlyphotography. The bride’s veil was a labor of love, handmade by the happy couple themselves. As for the attire, the bride stunned in her disco-inspired ASOS wedding dress, while the groom and his suit-wearing party looked dashing in their matching Zara ensembles.
