Jax (she/her) and Alex (he/they/them) embody the essence of a celebration, proving that weddings at their core are joyous unions. The need for traditional wedding elements is merely a formality. In fact, Jax and Alex’s love story didn’t require any formalities whatsoever – no rings, no vows, just a beautiful expression of devotion. What we’re left with is a stunning display of love and commitment.

And what better way to capture this than through the lens of Offbeat Wed vendor Adrienne Catanese Photography? Her snaps of Jax and Alex’s civil union ceremony and backyard celebration are nothing short of breathtaking. Let their special day serve as inspiration for all those looking to celebrate their own unique love story.

In a remarkable display of community spirit, the event’s floral arrangements were unexpectedly curated by friends of the hosts, who sourced the blooms from Whole Foods. Meanwhile, Jax and Alex took it upon themselves to upcycle their cloth napkins and silverware, meticulously cleaning and re-donating them afterwards in an effort to reduce waste and promote sustainability.

As the big day approached, the couple prepared together, receiving styling guidance from their closest friends – a group they affectionately referred to as their ‘chosen family’. This collective effort also doubled as an opportunity for the partners to offer each other support and encouragement. Jax, in her sparkly bronze gown by Calvin Klein, exuded elegance alongside Alex, who donned a vintage suit meticulously decorated with a lace wing applique, courtesy of Jax’s own creative touch.

As the evening drew to a close, Alex reappeared in a striking black sequined mini-dress paired with vibrant purple tights – a testament to the versatility of wedding attire. A dress is not limited to being worn on one’s wedding day alone; it can be a statement piece for any occasion, including a Love Celebration.

In those intimate morning moments leading up to both their Civil Union ceremony and backyard celebration, Jax tenderly applied blush and mascara to Alex, creating quiet yet powerful gender-expression-affirming moments that I was honored to capture as a photographer.

The celebration had a familiar feel to it, reminiscent of the iconic ‘cool wedding’ sketch from Portlandia. However, this wasn’t your typical wedding affair. Jax and Alex never used the ‘W’ word, instead embracing a non-traditional union after 10 years together as best friends. The ceremony was more about their love and commitment to each other than any formal marital designation, with the focus shifting to an unforgettable party surrounded by their closest friends.

Vendors behind this DIY backyard wedding (aka Love Celebration):

When it comes to planning a memorable and enjoyable celebration, attention to detail is key. For our special day, we brought in the best of the best to make sure every moment was truly unforgettable. Behind the lens, Adrienne Catanese captured all the magical moments with her photography skills. Invitations were designed by Minted, setting the tone for an elegant and sophisticated affair. The Silver Arrow Band provided the perfect soundtrack to get everyone moving and grooving.

To ensure everything ran smoothly, we had a team of experienced serving staff from Hostess with the Mostess on hand. For our outdoor ceremony, we relied on Long Island Tents to provide stunning rentals that added to the ambiance. And for those who wanted to commemorate their love, Manly Junction offered unique and thoughtful meteorite rings. To satisfy our guests’ sweet tooths, we served up a delicious vegan cake from CRUST Vegan Bakery in Philly, PA.

For a satisfying and filling vegan dinner, 3 Brothers Pizza Cafe in Long Island, NY was the perfect choice. Of course, no celebration would be complete without some fantastic drinks to toast with! We featured Superstar beer and Bridge Lane wine for our guests’ enjoyment. To add an extra touch of whimsy, Mobile Throne brought their fancy photo booth game, while Whole Foods Market provided beautiful florals that added a pop of color to the space.
