Tell us about your gay Disney wedding with a Thai water blessing ceremony :

As we began our ceremony, Phinn had a special surprise for Andres. Right when Andres walked down the aisle, our guests took out their lightsabers and ignited them for us to walk under. It was an incredible moment – Andres had no idea! We started with traditional secular western vows, but it was just the beginning of our unique celebration. Our officiant also shared a powerful message, acknowledging the journey we’ve taken as a same-sex couple.

We’ve been together for over a decade and have worked tirelessly to gain acceptance from our families and community. It took emotional labor to get our immigrant families on board, particularly Phinn’s parents. And it took collective effort from our LGBTQ+ community to achieve this milestone. Our officiant read the closing statement from Obergefell v. Hodges, reminding us that same-sex couples deserve equal dignity in the eyes of the law.

No union is more profound than marriage, as it embodies love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were. The landmark civil rights case recognized that marriage is not just about personal fulfillment but also about finding its fulfillment for oneself and one’s community. We wore custom Thai outfits throughout the ceremony, which added to its unique charm. It was beautiful to have that intimate exchange with all of our guests, and it felt like a true celebration of love and commitment.

Tell us about your Disney wedding reception:

Our special day started off with a lively reception that stuck to traditional norms. The atmosphere was set ablaze as we emerged to the vibrant tune of ‘La Vida es un Carnaval’ by Celia Cruz, a song that has a special place in our hearts. As we took to the dance floor for the first time as newlyweds, inspiration struck and we drew parallels with the iconic Netflix show Bridgerton. But it was the surprises we had in store for our guests that truly stole the show.

We decided to treat them to an exclusive viewing of Disney’s World of Color at California Adventure Park, a unique experience made possible by the recent return of Disney’s Nighttime Spectacular. It was the perfect way to cap off an evening filled with love and joy, watching as our friends and loved ones snuggled up together, mesmerized by their favorite Disney moments splashing across the water.

What was the most important lesson you learned from your wedding?

As we navigated the intricacies of wedding planning, it’s easy to get caught up in the finer details – from decorations and attire to music and entertainment. However, as our special day unfolded, what truly resonated was the collective energy of our loved ones gathered together. The love we shared with each other and our community was palpable, filling us with an overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude.

Being surrounded by those who matter most, sharing a moment of vulnerability and commitment in front of them, was nothing short of transformative. Tears of joy flowed freely as we publicly declared our love and devotion to one another, basking in the warmth of their support and adoration. Witnessing our dream wedding come together was truly the stuff memories are made of.
