Nonbinary Fantasy Wedding With A First Sword Duel

We were thrilled to experience the enchanting wedding celebration of Jessica and Kristen through the lens of De Nueva Photography. The couple’s big day was a whimsical wonderland, showcasing impeccable bespoke suit fashion and a sword duel that replaced the traditional first dance. Jessica’s stunning floral and satin cape, paired with Kristen’s breathtaking jeweled floral crown, elevated nonbinary fashion to new heights.

What’s more, Jessica and Kristen took their wedding planning to the next level by designing fantasy personas for themselves. Throughout the planning process, Jessica shared valuable wisdom, including the poignant reminder that ‘there is so much joy in being yourself, rather than being what others may want you to be.’

Now let’s get lost in this fantasy world…

We didn’t just stop at any ordinary attire for our big day – we wanted our outfits to be truly one-of-a-kind masterpieces that reflected our unique personalities. We commissioned custom designs from artists to bring our fantasy personas to life: K’s ethereal fae prince look and my roguish prince of bandits vibe. The end result was nothing short of breathtaking, with K donning a stunning jeweled floral crown and me rocking an embroidered floral cape with satin blue lining.

Both pieces perfectly captured the essence of who we are as individuals. To complement our bespoke looks, we chose to wear custom suits from King Brothers Clothiers. This experience was a dream come true for us, especially since I’ve always had a passion for dapper queer style. The ability to customize every detail, from thread color to buttonhole stitching, was incredible.

Our suits not only matched our wedding palette of deep jewel tones but also incorporated symbolic touches that paid homage to one another. My suit jacket boasted a rich red hue with blue patterned lining and contrast buttonholes as a nod to K’s style, while K’s suit featured a deep blue tone with red lining and thread, mirroring my own look. Wearing these bespoke suits felt like we were embodying our true selves.

Which do we love more, the officiant’s ‘fit or the handfasting cord?

We made it a point to wear exactly what we wanted at our wedding, not just because of societal expectations or pressure from others. We were determined to feel empowered, radiant, and joyful by embracing our unique personal style. This bold approach allowed us to stay true to our unconventional vision for the special day. One of the most unconventional aspects of our wedding was our first dance.

While a traditional dance would have been lovely, we felt self-conscious about performing in front of everyone. At one point, we even considered incorporating swords into the ceremony because I’m a sword enthusiast! A friend suggested doing a sword dance, which resonated with us – it was the perfect way to bring swords into the mix. In our experience, the key to creating an unforgettable wedding is thinking outside the box.

There are so many creative and unique elements you can incorporate that might not be immediately obvious. Want to have a sword duel-dance hybrid set to a Sailor Moon song? Look for talented individuals who specialize in choreography and stage fighting. Need a custom-made cape or intricate crown? Seek out creative artists, cosplayers, or designers who offer bespoke services. The possibilities are endless when you take the time to consider what you truly love and don’t love.
