Raise An Axe To This Viking Wedding

At Offbeat Wed, we’re thrilled to share an unforgettable Viking-themed wedding that exceeded our expectations. The stunning ceremony took place at Stone Oak Manor, a historic gem that Kirsten (They/Them) and Tim (He/Him/Any), the adventurous couple behind this epic celebration, have spent three years meticulously restoring into a charming bed and breakfast in Oak Glen, California.

On October 31st, 2021, surrounded by nature’s splendor, this daring duo exchanged vows, encapsulating their love story with an unforgettable Viking flair.

In a bold move away from traditional norms, we chose to blend gender boundaries and create a unified wedding party. We gave our guests free rein to express themselves through their attire, and allowed them to incorporate flowers, accessories, or any other decorative elements that spoke to them. Gone were the gender-specific labels like ‘bride’ and ‘groom’, replaced instead by terms that celebrated our union, such as ‘Partners for Life’ and ‘Newlyweds’.

Even Kirsten traded in her bouquet for a striking axe, adding an unexpected touch of whimsy to the proceedings. And who needs a traditional bridal crown when there’s the sparkle of love shining brightly behind your ear?

As we gathered in the local tavern, it was as if we were all returning from a long campaign, our weapons at the ready. Our friend Lauren, serving as officiant, handed out drinks as we made our way down the aisle, the atmosphere electric with anticipation. The ceremony itself was a unique blend of traditional and modern elements, with Tim and Kirsten exchanging not only rings, but also symbols of their unwavering commitment to one another.

In a nod to historic Norse and Viking customs, they exchanged weapons, a powerful symbol of protection, unity, and the unshakeable bond between two families. And yet, despite this formal declaration of devotion, we were reminded that our commitment is not limited to this moment – it’s a lifelong pledge, one that demands readiness for battle at a moment’s notice. With that, Lauren officially sealed their union, and we celebrated with a toast.

Our friends went above and beyond in crafting an unforgettable dessert spread that perfectly captured the essence of Halloween, horror, and Dungeons & Dragons. Instead of a traditional cake, we indulged in a stack of pancakes cut with a dagger – a quirky touch that added to the whimsy. The rehearsal dinner saw a surprise dance lesson taught by one of Kirsten’s siblings, which would later become a crowd-pleasing flash mob at the wedding itself.

As ‘Monster Mash’ played, roughly half of the guests were familiar with the choreographed routine, while the others quickly picked up the moves. By the end of the song, an impressive 100 people were dancing in unison, creating an electric atmosphere. To cater to the more reserved among us, we designated a cozy ‘introverts corner’ on the opposite side of the dance floor.

This secluded spot featured tables, chairs, and plush lounge seating, accompanied by shelves stocked with board games, books, and cards. Here, individuals could retreat from the commotion and engage in meaningful conversations without the distractions of loud music and dancing.

As I reflect on my experience, I realize that letting go of expectations can be a liberating process. Not just expectations others have of you, but also those you hold for yourself and your partner’s wedding day. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that certain people or elements should be present, only to find that true support comes from unexpected places and individuals. One aspect I loved about this couple’s wedding was their bold fashion choices!

What stood out to me was how they deliberately chose not to conform to traditional gender norms or binary expectations. As someone who doesn’t fit neatly into these roles themselves, I can appreciate the importance of making intentional decisions that align with your identity and values. During my own wedding planning experience, I faced a unique challenge: navigating gender dysphoria while trying to create a celebration that truly reflected me and my partner.

It forced me to develop new skills in self-advocacy and pushing back against expectations that didn’t feel authentic. At times, it felt isolating to stand out from the crowd, but ultimately, our wedding became a testament to the power of embracing our true selves. In retrospect, I’ve come to realize that every decision we make should leave us feeling seen, heard, and valued as individuals.

It’s crucial to prioritize this sense of authenticity in your own wedding planning journey, even if it means going against the grain. The end result can be a celebration that truly feels like you – quirky, interesting, and uniquely yours.
