From a young age, Rob and I have had an unconventional yet loving relationship. We met when we were around thirteen years old, with my memorable move – kicking him out of a playhouse window! Our lives took different paths when he joined the Army and I got married, but after his service ended and my marriage dissolved, our connection rekindled.

Over time, our shared experiences living with chronic and incurable diseases have taught us to cherish each moment and love each other with unbridled passion. With every day a battle against our bodies’ limitations, we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together – officially, that is.

Combining my affinity for nature with Rob’s desire for adventure, we decided to surprise everyone by eloping in downtown Annapolis, Maryland.

We didn’t feel the need for a grand ceremony; instead, we wanted to be authentic and unapologetic about our love. I wore my signature crown of flowers and bone necklace, while Rob rocked his faux-hawk and flower tie.

We took a risk by not inviting family and friends, but in the end, it was the right decision for us. By doing things our way, we avoided external pressures and expectations, allowing us to share our special day with loved ones on our own terms.

As I reflect on my wedding experience, one crucial takeaway stands out: cherishing the time spent with your partner is paramount. The weeks leading up to our special day were chaotic, filled with stress-inducing tasks like paperwork, budgeting, and finding the perfect dress. To make matters worse, I was away on business just days before the big event, leaving my then-fiancé to navigate the planning process solo. Despite the chaos, everything somehow fell into place.

In hindsight, it’s clear that the most important aspect of a wedding isn’t the lavish details or grand gestures – it’s the love and connection shared between two people. It’s a reminder to stay grounded, focus on what truly matters, and trust that it will all work out in the end.
