The Living Room

One popular arrangement is to have all furniture legs on the rug, with the rug extending at least six inches beyond each piece of furniture. For this layout, a standard size would be 9-by-12-foot or larger.

Alternatively, you could opt for a smaller rug that only covers the front legs of furniture, which works well in small rooms where the sofa is pushed up against the wall. A rug in the range of 8-by-10-foot to 9-by-6-foot would be suitable for this arrangement. Finally, you might consider a small rug placed under your coffee table. However, it’s worth noting that in limited spaces, a tiny rug can make the room appear even smaller.

In the dining room, the rule is simple: ensure all chairs sit on the rug and that it extends at least 36 inches beyond all sides of the table (with no less than 24 inches). This guideline applies to both rectangular and round rugs.

The Bedroom

If you choose to place only two-thirds of the bed on the rug, ensure that the rug extends 18-24 inches on each side, including the foot of the bed. For this layout, an 8×10-foot rug is suitable for queen-size beds and a 9×12-foot rug for king-size beds.

Alternatively, you can create an asymmetrical look by placing smaller rugs or runners alongside the bed, selecting options that are slightly wider than your nightstands and do not extend beyond the bed itself.
