Our wedding celebration was an eclectic blend that perfectly reflected our individual personalities. As someone who has always been fascinated by vintage and Victorian aesthetics, I wanted to incorporate those elements into our special day. However, with my signature blue hair and Mark’s constant companion – his baseball cap – we needed a way to tie everything together.

His willingness to wear the cap on our big day was exactly what I had envisioned, and it added a touch of whimsy to our otherwise vintage-inspired decor. Given our tight budget, we got creative with DIY projects, including custom seating charts, personalized favors, and handcrafted table numbers. These small touches helped bring our unique vision to life.

Our nuptial ceremony was characterized by its simplicity and intimacy, with a primary emphasis on cherishing moments with loved ones. As I made my way down the aisle, Etta James’ soulful rendition of ‘At Last’ served as the perfect soundtrack. Upon approaching the altar, I was taken aback to find my brother standing alongside the Justice of the Peace, tasked with delivering a heartfelt opening passage that eloquently captured the essence of our union becoming one.

This poignant moment held immense significance for me, and its memory remains etched in my mind.

I took a hands-on approach to wedding decorations and favors, embracing my love for crafting and creativity. To fit our vintage theme, I scoured flea markets for unique items like old door knobs and plates. A weathered pallet also became the perfect canvas for creating whimsical table numbers. The pièce de résistance was our seating chart, which I transformed into a charming ‘key to your seat’ display using repurposed window shutters.

My DIY efforts didn’t stop there; I decided to create succulent favors by planting 100 un-potted plants in adorable little pots months prior to the wedding. However, keeping them alive became a daunting task, and I’m proud to say it was a true challenge overcome. The biggest surprise of the reception came when my father arrived, dressed to the nines in a sharp outfit that perfectly matched the color of my hair – every detail was meticulously coordinated!

Seeing his beaming smile as he walked in still brings a huge grin to my face.

As a plus size bride, I faced an internal struggle with anxiety that was hard to overcome. The pressure to conform to societal beauty standards added fuel to the fire. To cope, I relied on my yoga practice and breathing exercises to keep my anxiety at bay. My advice to fellow brides struggling with similar feelings is simple: breathe. Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you, and remember that it’s okay not to conform to others’ expectations.

In fact, staying true to oneself can lead to a more authentic and fulfilling wedding day experience.
