As I recovered from my first bout with COVID, Joshua and I started planning our special day – or rather, our non-traditional celebration of love and commitment. Given that I’ve been dreaming of this moment since I was five years old, I wanted to make sure we co-planned every detail together. Joshua’s initial request for a more intimate gathering in a lesser-known location really resonated with me, so we decided to take the unconventional route.

Our special bond with Dungeons & Dragons was the thread that wove our wedding celebration together. With a history dating back to my childhood, when my dad led a group of friends and me in thrilling adventures as his Dungeon Mastered crew, it only made sense to infuse this love into our big day. In fact, I met my husband through D&D – a serendipitous encounter that solidified the game’s significance in our lives.

Our closest friendships and family ties have been forged through late-night gaming sessions and camaraderie around the table. As such, we decided to dedicate our wedding theme to this beloved hobby. Henry and I even chose character classes for the occasion – I was a Paladin, while he embodied the wise and powerful Wizard. As we approached the big day, we prioritized intentional preparation.

We scheduled Zoom sessions to fine-tune our vows and ceremony readings, focusing on the essentials rather than trivial details. This deliberate approach allowed us to savor each moment without unnecessary stress. Our creativity shone through in every aspect of the celebration. From a handmade video invitation to spray-painted allium centerpieces, we crafted each element with love.

We even incorporated symbols from our favorite game – the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse – as motifs throughout the decor. Tassel strands fashioned from fabric scraps, table names inspired by contra dance moves (a nod to how we met), and ‘bouquets’ made from brooches and fabric flowers added whimsy and charm. The festivities extended beyond the wedding day itself, with a weekend-long celebration featuring speeches during the rehearsal dinner instead of the reception.

We also allocated time for yoga and spa sessions in the morning, as well as board games to keep the fun going. Roughly 30 of our 69 guests joined us for the entire weekend – an intimate gathering that felt like one big adventure.

Imagine a wedding where the traditional wedding party is replaced with a quartet of horsemen foretelling the end of the world – and that’s exactly what happened at this unforgettable ceremony! As guests, they got to witness the bride and groom embracing their love amidst the apocalyptic backdrop, complete with a ball and chain ceremony that added an extra layer of humor and playfulness.

The Four Horsefolk of the Wedpocalypse rode in, each one embodying a different aspect of the couple’s relationship – and the results were nothing short of spectacular.

We kicked off our special day with a pair of signature cocktails that reflected our personalities – ‘The Blue Ponytail’ for Josh, named after his hair during the early stages of our relationship, and a Tequila Sunrise in honor of my love for The Eagles and tequila. We managed to sneak away from the group photos to enjoy a brief moment of solitude with the Horsefolk in the tented pavilion, making sure we were fed before joining the festivities.

The absence of traditional activities like garter tosses or bouquet tosses didn’t deter us, as I made my final wardrobe change for more photo opportunities after dinner. We did, however, participate in a ‘fight call’ practice with friends to perfect our Hora dance and enjoyed several formal dances throughout the evening. Our first dance was a meticulously choreographed waltz to Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’.

The rest of the night was filled with music as Josh danced with his mother to The Who’s ‘Good Looking Boy’, while I shared memorable moments with my Dad and Stepdad, enjoying mashups like ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ by Otis Redding and ‘Tequila’ by The Champs, and ‘The Impossible Dream’ as performed by Brian Stokes Mitchell and ‘Footloose’ by Kenny Loggins.

We had a blessing with minimal family drama, as everyone understood this wasn’t going to be a conventional celebration. By not getting bogged down in the usual wedding planning chaos, we were able to prioritize what truly mattered – setting the tone for our marriage from the start.

In hindsight, it’s crucial that we didn’t schedule anything for the days following our nuptials. If possible, take a cue from us and delay your honeymoon until you’re feeling refreshed.

We, on the other hand, spent three blissful days sleeping in, punctuated only by mealtimes – absolute heaven!

The bride’s attire was a perfect blend of vintage charm and personal touch. For her dress, she opted for a bespoke creation from Dresscued Vintage, formerly known as Blue-Eyed Boutique – a fitting choice given the DIY flair she brought to the overall aesthetic. As an alternative to a traditional engagement ring, the bride chose stunning vintage blue topaz earrings that added a touch of elegance to her look.

The pièce de résistance was the exquisite earrings and necklace set from GinaJiang Design, which perfectly complemented her overall style. The Governor’s Inn in Rochester, NH provided a picturesque backdrop for the special day.
