For example, large open-plan spaces can benefit greatly from a layered rug look, which can create a sense of grounding and welcome. As Sam Moradzadeh, principal of Woven and creative director at Studio Woven, notes, ‘I like the way a layered rug looks in an open floor plan. The openness of a room flows so well with a layered look.
‘ Rugs can also help define individual areas within a larger space, promoting a sense of order and functionality.
(Don’t) Mind the Traffic
Layered rugs offer the flexibility to easily switch out the top layer, making them ideal for high-traffic areas. Consider marking these zones in your home and choosing rugs that can withstand frequent use. As Gotfredson notes, ‘You can swap out the top layer periodically to avoid it getting too worn.’ This approach is particularly useful in entryways and transitional rooms, where durable light flat-weaves can protect valuable carpets hidden beneath.
For bedrooms, soft sheepskin or flokati rugs with higher piles create a cozy atmosphere. However, not all spaces benefit from rug-layering – the dining room, for instance, may become cluttered with two rugs on top of each other. As Palevsky advises, ‘The legs of the chairs plus the two rugs feel a bit heavy and busy.’
Choose the Bottom-Layer Rug

As Silber suggests, ‘if you have a plush texture on the bottom, try a flatweave on top, or vice versa.’ This will create a unique and refreshing décor that draws the eye upwards to the accent rug.
When selecting the base rug, remember to choose one that is larger than the top layer. If unsure, opt for a slightly larger rug than you think necessary. Silber recommends allowing at least 12 inches of space between the edge of the top layer and the bottom layer to avoid cluttering the space. To add some drama without breaking the bank, consider layering a vintage or antique rug over a larger base carpet. This technique not only fills the room with visual interest but also makes smaller rugs appear more extravagant.
Lawson notes that pairing a vintage piece with sisal can be a cost-effective way to achieve the look you want, as it allows you to balance the high price of vintage finds with the affordability of sisal.
Arrange the Furniture
When styling a small room, layering rugs can be a delicate balance. According to Gotfredson, the key is to consider the surrounding furniture. For instance, if your coffee table is glass, you may still have most of the rug underneath it. However, if you have a solid marble or wood piece, you’ll want to create some breathing room by placing the rug closer to the front of the room. The layout ultimately depends on your unique space and personal taste.
Similarly, when it comes to accentuating seating areas, Palevsky suggests that at least two feet of each piece of furniture should sit on the rug.
